Cgminer 3.7.2 sd card9/16/2023 ![]() ![]() I think the AX1500i could run fine with one more card but it would essentially be maxed out, and likely less efficient. After a trying a few different things to get that 290X detected by the driver, I finally decided that 5x 7970s would be good enough to start with, especially when I found that it was already pulling 1350 watts DC and staying above 92% efficient. Now brace yourselves, Windows 8 solved most of my problems and allowed me to get 5x 7970s working together! I tried getting a 6th card working but only got as far as getting it detected in the device manager without the graphics driver recognizing it. If you are experienced with Linux, then I think that is actually the better, simpler route. After spending a day with these two Linux distributions, I soon realized that I am not experienced enough with Linux to get everything configured and running properly, at least within the time frame I had to get this system running, so I opted for Windows 8. BAMT is specifically designed as a mining distribution of Linux, which comes with all the drivers, and programs you need to get up and mining in no time. Xubuntu is a barebones version of Ubuntu which is ideal for mining, since mining does not require many features of the OS. Linux does not seem to have the same GPU/driver detection limitations as Windows. This led me to look into some Linux distributions that are typically recommended by the crypto-mining community, such as Xubuntu and BAMT. Since one of the main points of building this rig was to show off how powerful and efficient the AX1500i was, I had to find another OS which would allow more than 4 GPUs. Of course I did not find this out until after I trouble shot every individual piece of hardware over the course of about two days. My original plan was to use Windows 7 on this rig since that is what I am most familiar with, but I eventually discovered that Windows 7 has difficulties running with more than 4 GPUs. If you have problems getting a single GPU mining, then a more complex rig is going to give you a headache, trust me! I would caution newcomers to crypto mining to start small, preferably using hardware you already own, before investing thousands of dollars into expensive GPUs. Apparently getting 5 or 6 GPUs running together in a system is more difficult than I had originally anticipated. Little did I know when I began, that it would be quite a bit of work to get everything running smoothly. I have been called “bitcoin crazed” around the office, and in addition to talking about it with anyone who will listen, I have dabbled in crypto mining over the past few months on my own, but never with a dedicated rig like this one. This time I am going to to give you a general overview of what the mining process actually entails, and talk a little about the software configuration and how I got it to start mining our glorious crypto currency. In the last part of this series Jon Gerow talked about the hardware we chose for this build and how we put it all together. ![]()
